The First Get Together

The great depression was in full swing during 1934 and in September the two Abbott partners, Percy Abbott and Recil Bordner, decided to have an open house on Saturday, Sept 15, 1934. Eighty magicians, mostly from the midwest, attended the event which included a two hour magic show with Percy Abbotts wife Gladys supplying backup music on the piano. After the show (which was closed to the public), a free lunch was served to the attending Magicians and the Abbotts Magic shop had garnered $88 in sales for the day, making it a financial success. Thus the first Magic Get Together was born.

By Any Other Name

It was at the 1936 Get Together that Lester Lake referred to Colon as the "Magic Capital of the World". And why not? After all, it was the home of the Great Blackstone, the home of Abbotts, and the setting for the annual Get Togethers. The phrase caught on and after the Get Together the Colon Express wrote "Abbott’s original made magic is supplied to magicians in all parts of the world, and through the activities of the Abbott Magic Novelty Company, Colon, Michigan is recognized as "The Magic Capital of the World".
