by Kamar on television with Regis Philbin. Evidently Kamar brings out the bully in television hosts, for the normally placid Philbin adopted David Letterman's technique while being suspended by the mediterranean magician.
Well, Steven, I watched a Letterman rerun in mid-March where the talentless Kamar performed the Rod Thru Body illusion and stumbled his way about with several other hokey mysteries. He brandished a copy of Magic Manuscript with his picture. The MM article concerned Kamar's (can this really be true?) twenty-plus appearances with Letterman. Does he actually think his constant re-booking is based on talent?
Kamar wondered why Letterman didn't call him Greece's answer to David Copperfield as Regis Philbin had. To paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen to Dan Quayle, I'd respond: "I know David Copperfield and you're no David Copperfield."
Since he resides out east, I'd suggest that he travel up to Boston for some instruction from Le Grand David and his troupe, but they'd probably only accept him as scenery - if he could stand still and be quiet.
NEW TOPS readers will recall my tirade against clowns two years ago. Well, all you sons of the greasepaint can be assured that my negative feelings for Kamar run deeper because of his national prominence. It's one thing to blow the Tricky Bottles effect at St. Mary's Annual Pancake Supper; quite another to do so on NBC!
Finally, when it comes to rabble-rousing, my friend Dennis Phillips of Winter Park, FL., has no equal:
"I am against magicians reviewing other magicians. What I think is that the publications          need          reviews          by
non-magicians!
"Can you imagine Frank Sinatra giving a review of Phil Collins or Madonna reviewing Debbie Gibson? Come on.
"Now, I admit that when we bought our trunk, although it was 25 years old, it was in perfect condition. This year our trunk will turn forty-one and it is still being used hard. Incidentally, we are still using the original six padlocks, each of a different color. Some magicians use heavier locks but these original locks do what they are supposed to do, they are easy to open and they are not quite so tough on the trunk. Plus, it is an interesting experience just to see the audience gentlemen match up the colored key tabs to the corresponding locks!"
Gary sent along two photographs. I'm including them in this month's column. One shows his Canvas Covered Box and, I presume, Jeanne. The other is quite a display of his apparatus (or, perhaps, Gary operates Abbott's-East and this is his elementary school display for his Get-together). Seriously, I can tell he has kept the Abbott woodshop busy with a Where Do The Ducks Go?, Palanquin, Temple of Benares, Cutting A Girl In Sixths, Duck Production, Classic, Tabouret, and lots more. Now, Gary ... about that clown!
