Arrow coming and he was still talking about John Mulholland's act. Coleman did the Linking Rings as I would want to do them.
All shows were held in a large circus tent, both shows were sold out, over a thousand admissions each night. Dorny was the M. C. for Friday night and he was never better; the show went over three hours. Saturday night the show went four hours, from eight o'clock until midnight, and believe it or not, I didn't see one person leave their seat to go out either night. Another thought, they were the two best Magic shows I have ever seen, and I have seen plenty, and good ones at that.
Those Philadelphia Magicians who did not get to Percy Abbott's Get-Together missed a lot of fun. Since I returned and told everyone what a good time I had, you may be sure that there will be quite a few more up from Philadelphia next year.
A friend of mine by the name of Johnson of Detroit drove us (Charles Larson, Stuart Rob-son and me) to Colon. Some of the boys were not so lucky. However, Percy did a good job getting every one out to Colon. I've mentioned Johnson because he was to drive right back to Detroit when he arrived in Colon. We arrived at 12 noon, and he enjoyed himself so much that it was after midnight when he left.
I have been to quite a number of conventions before, but this gathering of Magicians was the best of all. I saw more tricks, better tricks, better Magicians, and there was something doing all the time. Percy was on the job every moment looking out for everyone's comfort.
Among the great present were: Joe Berg, Stuart Robson, Bert Allerton, John Braun, Judge Carter, Russ Walsh, Roy Dohs, Eugene Berstein, Dr. Tarbell, John MulhoUand, Phil Thomas, Joe Ovette, Dorny, and so many others that I have not the space to write them here.
Highlights: Paul Stadelman was terrific, he has an egg bag made up to look like a chicken. I understand that he is going to put it on the market; take my word for it and order one now from Abbott, it's great. Duke Stern did a great job directing the orchestra; Lyman the stage manager, and Percy Abbott kept the shows moving smoothly; Howard Melson on the job every moment. Harlan Tarbell had around fifty Magicians in his class at $5.00 a person. Joe Ovette does a great act. The pet skunk during the excitement on Friday's act bit Mrs. Ovette, and the good Dr. Bennett came to the rescue. Bob Lotz looks great on the stage. Phil Thomas and Kay went over big on both shows. Met Ed Little on the Red
"Think-A-Drink Hoffman" back in town and expecting to go with a musical comedy show.
Tommy Martin in and expecting to go overseas for the USO. Tommy has a fine spirit as he says, "I don't mind the hardships we put up with once in a while as we really are helping do our bit in keeping the boys entertained."
Jack and Mary Trepel back from a trip for the USO and report a wonderful time ... A line from L. O. Gunn who is also rushing around for the USO . .. Sgt. Mendez in town waiting to go across to England with "This is the Army" show. So the boys in Great Britain will see some clever Magic and juggling here with Mendez and Larry Weeks.
Many of the regulars missing this week as they are all out at Colon, Mich., for the Abbott Get-Together. We do feel that we are missing the bunch and wish we were along.
An article in Collier's Magazine for Sept. 4th explaining all about the Orson Welles Wonder Show of Magic in California. . . Johnny Scarne who writes for "Yank" Magazine also has an article coming along in the future in the "Saturday Evening Post."
Don Still in from the Coast and he's raving about the Welles show which he saw there just a couple of days ago.
